Simple powerful rock and blues staple.

Confident, straightforward sound. Three chords cover all harmonic functions: rest (I), motion (IV), tension (V). One of the foundational progressions of rock-n-roll and country. High stability with options for open or closed endings.
The tonic provides a point of rest and stability. The subdominant sets the harmony in motion, moving away from that stability. The dominant builds tension that strives to resolve back to the tonic.
IV (subdominant) creates the first gentle departure from rest. V (dominant) — peak tension, strongest pull toward the tonic. Return to I — classic resolution. The T→S→D formula is the basis of all Western tonal music.
Exists in every major key. Especially popular in G, A, D, E (guitar keys). Adding V7 creates a more "bluesy" sound. Minor analog: i–iv–V — basis of harmonic minor.
Replace V → V7 for blues color. Extend to I–IV–V–IV (reggae variant). All chords as dom7: I7–IV7–V7 (blues). Add ii before V: I–IV–ii–V (softening). Power chords: I5–IV5–V5 (punk rock).
Not just a genre list — specific situations where this progression shines.
