How to change chords faster
Techniques and exercises for faster chord changes — tips for beginner and intermediate guitarists.
1. Anchor finger principle
When changing chords, find a finger that stays in the same place or moves minimally. This is your "anchor" — it speeds up the transition.
2. Practice only the transitions
You don't need to play the full chord. Drill only the transition moment: old chord → new chord. Slowly, with a metronome. The trainer helps set the tempo.
3. Learn neighboring chords in one position
G → C → D → Em are all in first position. Minimal hand movement = fast change. The less your hand moves up the neck, the faster the transition.
4. Use minimal-movement voicings
For a progression, multiple voicings exist for each chord. Choose those where your hand moves minimally. The position map on the chord page helps.
