How to learn barre chords
Step-by-step plan for mastering barre chords on guitar — from exercises to your first clean barre.
Step 1: Strengthen your index finger
Without strength in your index finger, barre won't work. Exercise: press all 6 strings at fret 5 and pluck each string individually, aiming for clean sound.
Step 2: Start with F at a higher fret
At higher frets (7–9) strings are closer to the fretboard — barre is easier. Master the E-shape at fret 5 (A major), then work down toward fret 1 (F).
Step 3: Hand position matters more than strength
Your index finger should be as close as possible to the fret wire (not in the middle of the fret). Thumb behind the neck, opposite your middle finger. Elbow close to the body.
Step 4: Practice 5 minutes daily
Barre comes through consistency, not duration. 5 minutes daily for 3 weeks will give more than an hour once a week.
