Five semitones. A sense of stability, often heard as a "transitional" interval.
Root on string 4, fret 0. Interval on string 4, fret 5.
The 4th is used everywhere. "Here Comes the Bride" (Wedding March) begins with an ascending 4th. In rock, 4th-based riffs are a style staple. Guitar tuning in 4ths allows chord shapes to move along the neck. In funk, quartal "stabs" are a signature of the style.
Memorize the opening of "Here Comes the Bride" — it is an ascending 4th. On guitar, a 4th is five frets on one string or the same fret on the next string (in standard tuning). Play quartal chords: fret one note each on three adjacent strings.
